Morality requires subtlety
Righteous conduct needs awareness
from inside oneself

Outside rules can help with guidance
Fear of outside punishment
might provide incentive

Both, though,
have most people thinking
of how they could escape from them

Simple rules
could give people guidance
of how to respect themselves and others
Rare punishment could provide incentive
of finding a constructive way of conduct

Morality, though
was built inside of us by evolution
as soon as human societies did form

A system of reward and punishment
for social conduct and relations
is already wired into our brain

The system though needs training

Temptation may cause confusion
When lesser things are more rewarded
When higher things are punished by neglect

The system will respond to harmony

To guidance by example
To actions that make sense

Harmony
Leading to feeling good for actions
which bring rewards for ourselves and all

Harmony
Causing little nudges of feeling bad
when we don’t behave so well

StoryAuthor's introduction to the poem: "The inner system of morality was given to us
by evolution but it needs to be trained
by reward, guidance by example,
and little nudges of punishment"
